Barfi won several awards and nominations at various award ceremonies across India. The film was selected as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film nomination for the 85th Academy Awards. The film went on to gross over 1.75 billion rupees (US$25 Million) worldwide. The film was a box-office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2012 in India and overseas. The film received widespread critical acclaim, with critics praising the cast performances, the direction, the screenplay, the cinematography, the music and the positive portrayal of physically disabled people. Made on a budget of approximately ₹300 million (US$4.0 million), Barfi! opened worldwide on 14 September 2012. Based in the 1970s in Darjeeling and Kolkata, the film is about Barfi Johnson ( Ranbir Kapoor), a deaf and mute young boy who develops a special bond with two young girls Shruti Ghosh ( Ileana D'Cruz) and Jhilmil Chatterjee ( Priyanka Chopra), while often being chased by a local police officer Inspector Sudhanshu Dutta ( Saurabh Shukla) for his nuisances.
